Mickey "mementmori" Petersen has been crowned champion of the 2012 English Poker Open after fending off a field of 137 competitors to complete a stunning victory at London's prestigous Fox Poker Club.
The Danish star is best known for his exploits on the online poker circuit having amassed an impressive $5,156,740 in winnings playing tournaments under the screen alias "mement_mori." However, Petersen's live tournament results have begun to take off too as his reputation as a fierce live competitor grows by the tournament. The Dane now holds a creditable $909,399 in cashes, following on from his dramatic victory at the ETP Copenhagen Main Event, $656,988 of which he has scooped this year alone.
The English Poker Open has a long tradition of attracting some of the best talent in the world and this year was no different as a star-studded line up including Sam Trickett, Surinder Sunar, Liv Boeree, James Akenhead, Neil Channing and Roberto Romanello took to the tables. However, it was to prove a frustrating tournament for most of the big names, particularly home favourite Trickett, who failed to make the final table.
As the concluding action commenced, just five players remained before Petersen sprung to life and eliminated Nicola Lategano who exited in 5th (20,700) to a Q-Q. It looked to be the Dane's day as his A-10 then got lucky against Jamie Roberts' A-K to end his challenge in 4th for 28,290.
Subsequently, Chris Bjorin then eliminated Surinder Sunar in 3rd (35,880) to get the heads-up phase of the competition rolling and a dramatic final showdown soon followed.
Bjorin, the man who stood between Petersen and another live title, is rightly regarded as a poker legend in his own right. Bjorin and Petersen may be the proverbial chalk and cheese in character but it was certainly the student giving the master a lesson on this occasion as Petersen held a 4.5 to 1 lead over his Swedish opponent Open champion going in to the heads-up battle.
The final hand of the tournament encapsulated Petersen's recent rise to prominence as he asserted the pressure by shoving a pre-flop holding 9-9 that was then called by Bjorin with A-K. The 7-10-8-5-5 board sealed Chris Bjorin's fate and he finished runner-up for 49,690, while Mickey Petersen was crowned the 2012 English Poker champion.
Following his win, Petersen was seen grinding out dozens of tournament tables on PokerStars but surely it will not be long before the Dane is seen battling it out in live tournaments once again.
